Persimmon Homes acquired the former Wardley Colliery and landfill site near Gateshead to develop 144 new homes.
Detailed site investigations highlighted variable ground conditions and a risk of settlement from former coal seams and landfill deposits. These complexities made traditional strip foundations unviable for parts of the development. Green Piling proposed a cost-effective, engineered solution to overcome these issues.

245no. 200mm precast piles and 1126m of precast ground beams were installed delivering an efficient, risk-managed foundation solution ideally suited to the challenging ground conditions of this brownfield site. Green Piling’s innovative G-sPan system, manufactured in our own in-house facility, enabled rapid on site installation, minimised the need for excavation and reduced waste and disruption.
